Open Call: Core themes

Designers and artists are today’s (S) Heroes who lead the green shift, promote sustainability, reduce material waste, and spread best practices for design.

This is why we are searching for multidisciplinary teams who are willing to create new designs that reflect sustainability via rethinking heroism. The teams will also be encouraged to use digital tools to enhance storytelling and creative expression.

All proposals should:

  • Reflect themes from the United Nations’ four Sustainability Pillars
  • Integrate (S) Hero stories in the proposal idea
  • Use creative digitality in design expression

Sustainability

The United Nations’ framework for sustainability is built around four interrelated pillars, which provide a holistic approach to sustainable development.

1. Environmental Sustainability

Protecting natural ecosystems, biodiversity, and managing resources responsibly.

2. Social Sustainability

Ensuring well-being, equity, justice, human rights, and access to essential services like education and healthcare.

3. Economic Sustainability

Promoting economic growth that is inclusive and does not harm the environment or society.

4. Cultural Sustainability

Promoting cultural diversity, heritage, and traditions, ensuring they are passed on to future generations.

(S) Heroism

We have created inspirational material to highlight transformational (S) Hero stories. The materials are created together with young people using drama pedagogical methods. The stories emphasize diverse backgrounds and experiences, showing that heroism is not limited by gender, appearance, or status.

Digital tools

Digital tools open new ways to design, imagine, and communicate ideas about sustainable futures. Teams can approach digitality through tools and skills they already use, such as digital illustration, 3D modelling, animation, or interactive storytelling. However, the proposal can also include the ambition to experiment with something new. This is the chance to get inspired by new technologies you have not yet had the chance to test.

Time for (S) Heroes portal materials offer a first glimpse and inspiration, while teams selected for the residencies will have opportunities to further develop and experiment with these approaches with additional support and technologies.

This post introduces the shared themes that should be reflected in every proposal submitted to the Time for (S) Heroes open call. If you are preparing an idea, we recommend continuing with the following posts in the portal:

Open Call: Categories. An overview of the four open call categories and the different interpretation methods and outputs expected in each.

Open Call: Process. How Open Call progresses from idea submission to team formation, residency opportunities, and exhibition outcomes.

Open call: Evaluation. The principles and criteria used by the jury when reviewing and selecting proposals.

Together, these four posts guide you from the core themes of the open call to the categories, the process, and the evaluation of proposals.
